Student subsequent/dependent Visa (sUBCLASS 500)

The Subclass 500 Subsequent Entrant visa allows family members of international students (CRICOS, VET or higher education students) —such as spouses, de facto partners, and dependent children—to join the primary visa holder in Australia while they study. This visa offers family members the right to live, work (with conditions), and study in Australia for the duration of the student’s course.

While often informally referred to as a “partner visa” by students, it is not the same as the official Partner Visa (subclass 820/801 or 309/100) and is solely linked to the student’s temporary visa status

Overview

Key Features of the Student Visa (Subclass 500):

  • Live in Australia as a dependent of a Subclass 500 student.

  • Partners of student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, or unlimited hours depending on the main applicant’s level of study.

  • Access to Australian education (for school-aged dependents).

At Empathy Migration, we help families reunite by guiding you through the application process, documentation, and visa conditions with care and precision.

Eligibility Criteria:

To apply for the Subsequent Entrant Student Visa, applicants must:

  • Be the spouse, de facto partner, or dependent child of a current Subclass 500 visa holder.

  • Provide proof of relationship (e.g., marriage or birth certificates, joint financial/shared residence documents).

  • Hold adequate Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

  • Meet health and character requirements.

  • Demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support their stay in Australia.

  • Demonstrate a genuine intention to support primary applicant in Australia. (GSR)

How We Can Help:

Many dependent visa applications are refused due to weak evidence of relationship, insufficient financial documentation, or a poorly presented case. As a registered migration agent with a proven track record of successful outcomes, I’ll guide you through each step with clarity and care.

We’ll work together to:

  • Prepare a strong relationship evidence portfolio.

  • Develop a clear and compelling GTE statement, addressing your genuine temporary stay in Australia.

  • Identify common risks and avoid mistakes that often lead to delays or refusals.

  • Ensure your documents, translations, and forms meet Department of Home Affairs standards.
